Jätkäsaari Comprehensive School in West Helsinki invites you to a virtual visit
One distinctive feature of education in Helsinki is the phenomenon-based teaching and learning, which each school in the City of Helsinki is committed to in their common curriculum. It’s a learned-centred, multidisciplinary approach to teaching and learning, which engages pupils to the learning process holistically. In other words, the kids’ voices are heard all the way from planning the teaching to choosing the best methods to assess their schoolwork.
Jätkäsaari is a new urban area, just off the West Harbour in Helsinki. This vivid neighbourhood is home to the state-of-the-art Jätkäsaari Comprehensive School, which has drawn attention from far and wide with its modern architecture that enable new kinds of learning environments and take the users’ pedagogical needs into account.
Jätkäsaari Comprehensive School focuses on phenomenon-based learning and inquiry-based learning. The school year is divided into five phenomena with breaks in between. These five phenomena are:
- Safe society
- The world of cultures
- Thinking science
- Story time
