What is good self-directed learning and open teaching at the elementary school level? How to support children's self determination in the classroom?
PhD student Antti Moilanen talks about research studies and his findings in promoting self determination using open learning, and the impacts on children's learning and motivation.
Open teaching impacts the student learning outcomes as much as teacher-led teaching does. However, through open teaching, the development of personality traits such as self-direction, independence, initiative and creativity, a positive attitude towards school and a general self-perception is more effective and more sustainable than in teacher-led teaching. In addition, teachers who implement open teaching on a regular basis are evaluated positively in the core categories of a good teacher.
Based on studies, the concern that open teaching or self-directed learning undermines learning outcomes does not seem to be justified. Namely, there is evidence that learning outcomes are equally good in open teaching and traditional teacher-led teaching. However, open teaching seems to better promote teacher independence, creativity and school enjoyment than teacher-led teaching.
