Making Young Voices Heard: Public Speaking & Self-Expression

5.11.2019 at 14:00 - 15:30
Venue: Central Library Oodi, Maijansali
people 8 / 30

Hands-on interactive and engaging workshop and discussion for all ages.

Making young voices heard is about equipping children and youth with the tools to help them enhance their oracy, communication, self-expression and public speaking skills. When given the opportunity, children are able to demonstrate originality of thought and depth of vision. With the right instruments and preparation the young voices carry depth and substance transcending age, geography and other boundaries.

The workshop explores the best practices internationally in teaching public speaking, oracy and self-expression skills to children and youth:

  • What kind of education in the sphere of public speaking and self-expression is currently offered?
  • What works exceptionally well in teaching these critical skills to children? What are some of the bottlenecks?
  • What are some of the most effective teaching methodologies in Finland and internationally?
  • Exercises, practical examples and hands on interaction!

Educators, leaders, parents, youth and interested professionals are invited for the knowledge exchange. The workshop aims at providing an interactive and engaging learning experience to its participants on a theme that offers a fresh, contemporary and different perspective on making young voices heard.

Program

14.00-14.15 Leading into the theme, an introductory overview and presentation of the current international outlook of teaching children and youth public speaking skills is given – showcasing the inspiration and the existing body of teaching behind the workshop topic.

14.15-15.10 Within the interactive workshop format, a scope of tools and techniques will be introduced for the purposes of idea-generation and sharing to enable an exciting and multi-faceted discussion of the workshop topic (60 min).

15.10-15.30 To conclude, the summary of the discussion discoveries will be made. The potential avenues for further work among the workshop participants will be identified, prioritized and proposed for the future international research collaborations.
